Why you’ll never have to worry about casting, overloading, or polymorphism when you’re writing JavaScript code

How to use the Document Object Model to change your web pages without making your users click buttons

If you’ve ever read a Head First book, you know what to expect — a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works. Head First JavaScript is no exception. It starts where HTML and CSS leave off, and takes you through your first program into more complex programming concepts — like working directly with the web browser’s object model and writing code that works on all modern browsers.

The latest is the Apache Struts 2 which is the result of a merger between the Apache Struts and OpenSymphony WebWork projects. The objective behind the development of this product was to develop an easy-to-use yet feature-rich framework Struts 2 is superior to the traditional Struts in that it has some solid features like plugin framework, JavaServer Faces integration, and XML-free configuration. The book serves as a guide for developing professional, production-ready modern web applications as it covers completely the Apache Struts 2 web application framework. Java web developers with a background in Struts 1 or WebWork would value this book greatly.

The authors of the book are Don Brown, Chad Davis and Scott Stanlick. Don Brown is a member of the Apache Software Foundation, and has been a Struts committer since 2003. Chad Davis is a J2EE developer, software consultant, and writer. He has vast experience in writing and has published poetry and written draft legislation at the state level besides computer science journals. Scott Stanlick is a corporate IT instructor and has experience in embedded systems, client-server applications, and large scale distributed applications.

Essentially, the book covers the history of the architecture of Web applications and uses of the standard web API to create applications with increasingly sophisticated architectures. Besides it touches upon topics like sophisticated user interface techniques, intelligent caching and resource management, performance tuning, debugging, testing, and Web services. In addition, the reader can also find an overview of the most popular Web application frameworks, however it is difficult to evaluate the frameworks because the book remains silent on the downside of these frameworks while highlighting their pluses.
